Angry Birds Space not coming to Windows Phone

FIRST! of many Developer Defections!!

quote
***************
Remember when we told you that Angry Birds Space was not coming to Windows Phone on its launch date? Well, it appears that Windows Phone owners will not be fighting pigs in space for a long while, according to Bloomberg.

"We're the No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application," gloated Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of Rovio Entertainment Oy. Its a shame that Mr Vesterbacka chose to ignore the fact that they are asking for a king's ransom from Windows Phone Users, charging $3.00 for a game that they offer for free on the Android platform. Huge undertaking it maybe, but one would think they would return a favour by supporting the Windows Phone platform given that users bought their game in droves.

"For the time being, it's too expensive for Rovio to adapt new games to Windows Phones. If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it's a lot of work to technically support it," Vesterbacka said.

Windows Phone’ Gets…Smoked, REFUSES to offer prize? Microsoft RIGGING Contest???

You gotta ask, how can a store manager be "so sure" that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus *DID NOT* win, unless Microsoft was playing dirty tricks?

Nokia WILL FAIL---a given.

quote
***************

Sounds straightforward. But when blogger Sahas Katta of Skattertech took up the challenge of displaying the weather in two cities, he says, he was able to beat Windows Phone using his Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Through sheer coincidence, he’d previously set it up to skip the lock screen and display two weather widgets on the desktop, so all he had to do was power on the phone.

Katta says, however, that the Microsoft Store employees in Santa Clara, California refused to acknowledge his win as a win. Nor did they explain their actions. In Katta’s account, he doesn’t seem to have done anything that violated either the letter or the spirit of the rules.

When Microsoft titles a competition “Smoked by Windows Phone” and offers lavish laptops as prizes, it’s obvious that it’s very, very confident that the odds are stacked in Windows Phone’s favor. (I keep thinking of carnival ring-toss games.) But if Katta has his facts straight, it appears that Microsoft owes him an ultrabook — and that it should diffuse any controversy over his tale by forking the Folio over immediately. And if the company is maintaining that Katta was indeed smoked by Windows Phone, it should state so officially.

Lumia 900 may not get next major Windows Phone update

I visited Nokia’s sparkling headquarters in Sunnyvale to discuss the upcoming launch of the Lumia 900 and I asked how confident can people be that this handset will be able to get the next major Windows Phone update, which many are expecting toward the end of the year.

“We don’t know yet,” Chris Searight, Nokia marketing launch manager, said. He also added that the company is really anxious to “know what comes next.”

WINDOWS PHONE FAIL! --FAIL: Windows Contest Backfires When Galaxy Nexus Beats Lumia 800

FAIL: Windows Contest Backfires When Galaxy Nexus Beats Lumia 800

quote
***************

That's what happened to Windows over the weekend, as their "Phone Challenge" promotional contest suffered its first defeat at the hands of Android.

The Windows Phone Challenge is supposed to go like this: walk into a Windows Phone retail store and see if your phone can win in a series of specially designed tests meant to highlight the benefits of Windows phones over its competitors. If you manage to smoke the Windows Phone, you get a $1,000 laptop. If you don't, Windows will offer you a free phone in exchange for the one you're currently using. It's all part of Windows new and aggressive marketing strategy against Android and iOS. Apparantly, the contest was going great, until Sahas Katta showed up with his Galaxy Nexus.

Microsoft already scared that Nokia Lumia 900 won't sell?

quote
***************

What is a little strange, however, is the fact that the Lumia 900 isn't even out yet and it's already getting discounted to virtually nothing. When's the last time that happened to any smartphone you purchased? One certainly doesn't get the latest Apple iPhones for free with a new contract, nor any top-shelf Android device.

Given that the Lumia 900 has routinely been described as Nokia's flagship device for AT&T — "our hero phone," said AT&T's Jeff Bradley in an interview with CNET — it's a little odd to see it so quickly discounted without any accompanying sale, promotion, or explanation

Only 40,000 phones sold on LAUNCH DAY! (after $100 MILLION wasted on Hype)

OH, Glorious Schadenfreude . Seems as though MSFT only sold 40,000 phones on Launch day.

Seems to me, I seem to remember IPhone people camping out/lining up for *the most* expensive handset ever sold at the time.

Ballmer LAUGHED at Apple, couldn't see how they could sell through
Ballmer THE GOOD then laughed at GOOG, couldn't comprehend why they'd give away the OS.
Again, myopic 20th Century thinking

quote
***************

Did a $100 million advertising budget only manage to generate 40,000 Windows Phone 7 sales on launch day?
This according to TheStreet:
Even with a glitzy media intro last month hosted by champion inside-seller and company chief Steve Ballmer, Microsoft, which spent a reported $100 million on the phone’s advertising campaign, sold a mere 40,000 Windows 7 phones Monday, according to a market research source who tracks phone sales.
Time to put that 40,000 figure in perspective. Apple had some 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4, and is selling some 270,000 a day. Google says that some 200,000 Android handsets are being activated daily. Microsoft gave away some 89,000 handsets to employees, a figure not included in the sales estimate.
UPDATE: Actually, the Microsoft deal is with employees is more complex than that - employees will be offered up to $220 towards off contract, or $550 for those on contract and outside their upgrade cycle. Pre-orders start November 8th and delivery won’t be until after November 18th.

Windows 8 fails to wow CIOs, at least so far
CIO Insights---Tech Republic

By Steve Ranger

quote
***************

it seems that CIOs are still waiting to for the must-have enterprise features in Windows 8.

Last week Microsoft showed off the consumer preview of the forthcoming operating system, expected later this year. Among the key changes is an emphasis on tablet and touch-based computing. Windows 8 is designed to run on laptop, desktop computer and tablet hardware, scaling its interface to various screen sizes, and the new tile-based Metro interface.

But while Microsoft argues that Windows 8 represents a “generational change” for Windows - the likes of which has not seen since the release of Windows 95 - it seems members of TechRepublic’s CIO Jury are not impressed by the new features they have seen, at least not so far.

Windows 8 Customer Preview…not really impressed !

First of all a lot of stuff seems both unfinished and buggy. Yes it’s a Beta but some stuff feels more Alpha than Beta. Most of the Metro apps also looks like they where designed for a phone, not for a tablet or desktop PC. There’s not really many apps in the first place and certainly no useful apps.

The Metro mail client for instance has virtually no settings, a fixed layout and you cannot add POP or IMAP account, only Hotmail, Gmail and Exchange ones. WTF? It also seems to update if and when it feels like it and there’s no way to merge incoming mail in a single inbox. Come one, my phone does better than that!

quote
***************
The much advertised SkyDrive app is also pretty much a joke. It has a really simplistic and boring looking interface and you cannot really do much with it. There’s for instance no way, that I’ve found, to create a new folder on SkyDrive. You still have to use the web interface for that. The “SkyDrive” integration is pretty much only a few SkyDrive aware Metro apps. When using the File Explorer in Desktop mode there’s no SkyDrive for instance.

The Metro version of Internet Explorer is also pretty much a joke. It’s not very stable. Ok it’s a Beta so that’s perhaps not a disaster…yet. But, there’s no synchronization of favorites between the Desktop version and the Metro version.

Despite its strong reputation for sturdy hardware, Nokia has long struggled with a series of software flops, including the ill-fated MeeGo OS and the steady decline of Symbian. "It's like starting all over again,” said Saejis.

The executive also admitted that succeeding to crack the U.S. market would be critical to the firm’s global strategy. “We must succeed in the U.S. if we are to succeed in the world," he declared.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Nokia announced it would be cutting down on its manufacturing operations in Europe and Mexico, moving device assembly work to Asia instead. The move will make 4000 employees redundant.

Meanwhile, winning over customers to Windows Phones will be a challenge. The smartphone market is becoming more concentrated. Apple, Samsung and HTC made 99% of the sector's operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2011, estimates Sanford Bernstein. Sales of new Windows Phones made up less than 2% of U.S. smartphone sales in the quarter; its "marketplace" offers just 65,000 apps, versus more than 400,000 for the iPhone.

The attached negative figure did not help subdue critiques on Stephen Elop’s bold move to switch the flagship smartphone platform from Nokia’s Symbian OS to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 on his first year as CEO.
.........
The decision to endorse the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system for Nokia’s smartphone lineup apparently fell short of expectations and lost spark to put the firm into action against major OEM rivals in that market.
...............

Analysts and managers who monitor the company’s performance have varying opinions, especially when Nokia’s graphs are not following the right path.
The critical issue Nokia now faces is that its latest handsets are not faring well against rival smartphone makers, which translates to no quick reprieve from its dull sales figures that continuously hamper it in recent years.

Nokia didn't need an SEC filing to tell the world it had a terrible 2011, however it did attach a figure, a very large negative one, to Stephen Elop's first full year in charge of the firm. According to Nokia's SEC filing, the firm posted a €1.4bn loss during 2011 with decreased revenues and lower earnings per share.
Elop's decision to plump for Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system for its smartphone range has failed to jolt the firm into action, materialising in sales of €38.7bn, almost €4bn down from a year previously. After taking into account the cost of flogging its phones, research and development, administration and marketing expenses, close to a €1.1bn impairment to goodwill and tax all Nokia had left was a €1.4bn loss, hardly inspiring for the firm.

Our plans to introduce and bring to market quantities of attractive, competitively priced Nokia products with Windows Phone that receive broad market acceptance and are positively differentiated from competitors’ products, both outside and within the Windows Phone ecosystem are subject to certain risks and uncertainties, which could, either individually or together, significantly impair our ability to compete effectively in the smartphone market. If we are not successful in the smartphone market, our business would become more dependent on sales in the feature phone market, which is, especially at lower price points, an increasingly commoditized and intensely competitive market, with substantially lower growth potential, prices and profitability compared to the smartphone market. Recently, smartphones of other manufactures, particularly Android-based smartphones, are reaching lower price points, which is increasingly reducing the addressable market and lowering the price points for feature phones and may adversely affect our feature phone business.

unless Nokia can pull a rabbit out of a hat and make Windows Phone an attractive ecosystem for developers, the chance of the company regretting its decision to get into bed with Microsoft is pretty high. It reads, “We may face issues in selecting, engaging or securing support from leading operators and retailers for the initial launches and sales ramp-up of our Nokia products with Windows Phone due to, for instance, inadequate sales incentives, training of sales personnel, marketing support and experience in generating interest for a new and relatively unfamiliar Windows Phone platform in an otherwise highly competitive market.”

The Bad
However, the Metro user interface doesn’t seem to be ‘page aware,’ and you end up having to keep track of where you eye had got to when you scroll. The Start Screen when ‘all apps’ are displayed is a good example of this problem.

The Ugly

This makes me even more annoyed with the Metro user interface, because not only am I having to relearn something, when it’s convenient for Microsoft (that is, Microsoft has failed to), I’m unceremoniously dumped back into the Classic user interface again. Bolting on a new user interface is one thing, but when that user interface is incomplete, it makes you question the value of it.

It staggers me that Microsoft hasn’t managed to extend Metro across the board when it comes to core functionality. How are tablets users expected to manage files of trawl through control panel with their pudgy fingers on using the Classic interface?

Inconsistencies in the Windows user interface is nothing new, but this mish-mash of Metro and Classic takes it to an absurd level.

...................
The problem comes if you’re using a traditional system. If you’re sitting in front of a system that has a keyboard and mouse attached (or for that matter, a trackpad), then it’s hard to make a compelling case for Windows 8. Sure, there are some nice touches, but on the whole it’s still Windows 7 just with a new user interface slapped on top for you to learn.

There was still one player vital for the ecosystem that was not presented in the figure. This, obviously not so important player, was—the customer.

The fact that the understanding of customer needs is not in the driver’s seat for the builders of Windows Phone and Microsoft-Nokia ecosystem is already producing consequences.

One example is the data protection policy of the operating system. The different applications have direct access only to data that is produced the application itself. If the application wants to access data belonging to other applications, it has to ask the user explicit permission, always. This will mean that the user becomes a rubber stamp giving Oks, if someone does not develop an illegal bypass for that.

.......................

If Microsoft and Nokia want to improve the success probability of Windows Phone, they should put their focus on the area that is always the key source of innovations and growth: understanding customer needs better.

9. There's no fanfare
Did anyone really care that Nokia was launching its Lumia 700 on T-Mobile's network on Jan. 11? There wasn't much buzz about it. And when sales fall short on that device, Nokia will be able to point to that as a key reason. Hype is everything in the mobile market. The companies that have it succeed, and those that don't have it fail. Unfortunately for Nokia, it has no hype to rely on, which can only mean one thing: failure.
10. There's a general lack of market understanding

Examples Below:

Windows 8 logo is a disaster (Titanic Logo).

Steering the right course is essential, however. Customers will be confused enough without brand changes. Microsoft, consider this post your iceberg warning. Will you sail ahead like Captain Smith did Titanic or slow down and go around the ice?

Far too generic. To remove the four-color design from Windows is a really bad brand direction, and in my opinion, so is Metro. But just like always, Microsoft isn't going to listen to the loud voices complaining. They've already set this dud in motion. A year to year and a half from now, we'll be listening to Microsoft apologizing, just like they (indirectly) have with Vista, while Windows 9 will be the version that 8 should have been. They never learn.

Pay attention to the Windows 8 rollout and see what you think. There will be a lot of references to Vista, you watch.

Windows 8: Metro, a leap forward or a leap back?

Summary: In many ways Windows 8's Metro interface is like the transition from DOS to Windows, but this time we might say backwards.
.................
So, I think it's clear that Metro is a signal of us moving backwards into a more simplistic interface. What will become of the venerable Windows applications with buttons all over the place, toolbars, windows and all sorts other complication busy controls? Is is possible to pack all of that into a Metro interface application? I doubt it, but anything is possible. If we're looking to make generations of people who only know what the Metro interface looks like, what happens when they finally have to see the above application and use it? I see this same problem existing on OSX too. As it it iOS-ifies itself, we're left with (possibly) an interface that looks so much like that iPad that more complex applications won't exist or be usable. Could this push the class divide between the more technical folks and the non-savvy among us to even greater depths?

The program monopolized the computer and was generally always full screen
Again, very true for the Metro style of application. I think very shortly after the release of Windows
8, we'll have a whole host of people who will never encounter the Windows desktop or a traditional Windows application for the entire time they own a computer.

4. There was a limited amount of information that could be shown on the screen due to the technical nature of what was being displayed and how it was being used
This is true, but not because of a technical limitation. It's being limited by choice. When you're looking at a Metro application, you can't have a video running in the top corner, and also editing a file in the bottom corner. Metro apps are visually monopolistic by design.*********************************

Programs "Monopolize" the screen...so no more "Multi-Tasking in Windows??????"
