Remember when we told you that Angry Birds Space was not coming to Windows Phone on its launch date? Well, it appears that Windows Phone owners will not be fighting pigs in space for a long while, according to Bloomberg. 

"We're the No. 1 app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application," gloated Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer of Rovio Entertainment Oy. Its a shame that Mr Vesterbacka chose to ignore the fact that they are asking for a king's ransom from Windows Phone Users, charging $3.00 for a game that they offer for free on the Android platform. Huge undertaking it maybe, but one would think they would return a favour by supporting the Windows Phone platform given that users bought their game in droves.

"For the time being, it's too expensive for Rovio to adapt new games to Windows Phones. If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it's a lot of work to technically support it," Vesterbacka said.

But when blogger Sahas Katta of Skattertech took up the challenge of displaying the weather in two cities, he says, he was able to beat Windows Phone using his Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Through sheer coincidence, he’d previously set it up to skip the lock screen and display two weather widgets on the desktop, so all he had to do was power on the phone.

Katta says, however, that the Microsoft Store employees in Santa Clara, California refused to acknowledge his win as a win. Nor did they explain their actions. In Katta’s account, he doesn’t seem to have done anything that violated either the letter or the spirit of the rules.

When Microsoft titles a competition “Smoked by Windows Phone” and offers lavish laptops as prizes, it’s obvious that it’s very, very confident that the odds are stacked in Windows Phone’s favor. (I keep thinking of carnival ring-toss games.) But if Katta has his facts straight, it appears that Microsoft owes him an ultrabook — and that it should diffuse any controversy over his tale by forking the Folio over immediately. And if the company is maintaining that Katta was indeed smoked by Windows Phone, it should state so officially.

I visited Nokia’s sparkling headquarters in Sunnyvale to discuss the upcoming launch of the Lumia 900 and I asked how confident can people be that this handset will be able to get the next major Windows Phone update, which many are expecting toward the end of the year.


“We don’t know yet,” Chris Searight, Nokia marketing launch manager, said. He also added that the company is really anxious to “know what comes next.”

That's what happened to Windows over the weekend, as their "Phone Challenge" promotional contest suffered its first defeat at the hands of Android.


The Windows Phone Challenge is supposed to go like this: walk into a Windows Phone retail store and see if your phone can win in a series of specially designed tests meant to highlight the benefits of Windows phones over its competitors. If you manage to smoke the Windows Phone, you get a $1,000 laptop. If you don't, Windows will offer you a free phone in exchange for the one you're currently using. It's all part of Windows new and aggressive marketing strategy against Android and iOS. Apparantly, the contest was going great, until Sahas Katta showed up with his Galaxy Nexus.

Did a $100 million advertising budget only manage to generate 40,000 Windows Phone 7 sales on launch day?

This according to TheStreet:

Even with a glitzy media intro last month hosted by champion inside-seller and company chief Steve Ballmer, Microsoft, which spent a reported $100 million on the phone’s advertising campaign, sold a mere 40,000 Windows 7 phones Monday, according to a market research source who tracks phone sales.

Time to put that 40,000 figure in perspective. Apple had some 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4, and is selling some 270,000 a day. Google says that some 200,000 Android handsets are being activated daily. Microsoft gave away some 89,000 handsets to employees, a figure not included in the sales estimate.

UPDATE: Actually, the Microsoft deal is with employees is more complex than that - employees will be offered up to $220 towards off contract, or $550 for those on contract and outside their upgrade cycle. Pre-orders start November 8th and delivery won’t be until after November 18th.

First of all a lot of stuff seems both unfinished and buggy. Yes it’s a Beta but some stuff feels more Alpha than Beta. Most of the Metro apps also looks like they where designed for a phone, not for a tablet or desktop PC. There’s not really many apps in the first place and certainly no useful apps.

The Metro mail client for instance has virtually no settings, a fixed layout and you cannot add POP or IMAP account, only Hotmail, Gmail and Exchange ones. WTF? It also seems to update if and when it feels like it and there’s no way to merge incoming mail in a single inbox. Come one, my phone does better than that!

The much advertised SkyDrive app is also pretty much a joke. It has a really simplistic and boring looking interface and you cannot really do much with it. There’s for instance no way, that I’ve found, to create a new folder on SkyDrive. You still have to use the web interface for that. The “SkyDrive” integration is pretty much only a few SkyDrive aware Metro apps. When using the File Explorer in Desktop mode there’s no SkyDrive for instance.

The Metro version of Internet Explorer is also pretty much a joke. It’s not very stable. Ok it’s a Beta so that’s perhaps not a disaster…yet. But, there’s no synchronization of favorites between the Desktop version and the Metro version.

This makes me even more annoyed with the Metro user interface, because not only am I having to relearn something, when it’s convenient for Microsoft (that is, Microsoft has failed to), I’m unceremoniously dumped back into the Classic user interface again. Bolting on a new user interface is one thing, but when that user interface is incomplete, it makes you question the value of it.


It staggers me that Microsoft hasn’t managed to extend Metro across the board when it comes to core functionality. How are tablets users expected to manage files of trawl through control panel with their pudgy fingers on using the Classic interface?


Inconsistencies in the Windows user interface is nothing new, but this mish-mash of Metro and Classic takes it to an absurd level.

The problem comes if you’re using a traditional system. If you’re sitting in front of a system that has a keyboard and mouse attached (or for that matter, a trackpad), then it’s hard to make a compelling case for Windows 8. Sure, there are some nice touches, but on the whole it’s still Windows 7 just with a new user interface slapped on top for you to learn.

Again, very true for the Metro style of application. I think very shortly after the release of Windows
8, we'll have a whole host of people who will never encounter the Windows desktop or a traditional Windows application for the entire time they own a computer.

This is true, but not because of a technical limitation. It's being limited by choice. When you're looking at a Metro application, you can't have a video running in the top corner, and also editing a file in the bottom corner.
